Give Crazy to put a well in Ghana

Give Crazy

Dave Ramsey featured Pastor Dave, a pastor at Third Day Christian Fellowship Church in St. Joseph, MO during one of the famous “Giving” theme hours featured every Christmas season on the Dave Ramsey Show.

In the 2nd hour, Pastor Dave told his story of volunteering in Valley Community Center Food Kitchen and taking donations along with donations collected from his 100 member church. They raised over $10,000 that Sunday and were able to put two water wells in Ghana with the money.

His son built a website called “GiveCrazy.com” where people can find more information (and donate online via PayPal too!)

Dave Reads – What The Great Depression Did

Dave read an article from the Motley Fool

…called “What the Great Depression did that this Recession won’t” during the 2nd hour on December 14, 2011.  The main message: Unlike the Great Depression, not much has changed.  For more, go to http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2011/12/13/what-the-great-depression-did-that-this-recession.aspx

Dave expanded on the topic by talking about how he can hardly get out of his building’s parking lot because the traffic around the mall across the street is so congested. He also reminded us that bankruptcy and divorce in the 60′s was something most people would be ashamed to be a part of. Things are more disposable these days and there has been a shift in the way people look at obligations.

Dave Reads – Biting The Hand That Feeds You

On September 13, 2011 (3rd hour) Dave read a post by David H. King, President and CEO of Alexander-Haas. The article, posted on the Giving Institute’s blog, talked about how much the richest in America give and how politicians and non-profits keep asking them to give their “Fair Share”.

It is a quick read, check it out for yourself. Good stuff:

Bill and Denise Whittemore

Oldest daughter gets married: Denise Ramsey and Bill Whittemore

Admittedly, I no longer post everyday events on this site because I am so busy working on my business and business blog. But every once in a while there is something noteworthy enough that it warrents coming by and recording it for prosperity. And this week was another important day for Dave Ramsey.

Dave and Sharon’s oldest daughter Denise was wed to Bill Whittemore on Saturday June 25th, 2011. Their videographer posted a short video (which I have to say is 1st class!) http://fullframecine.com/2011/06/denise-bill-nashville-wedding-trailer/

Nice looking couple!

However, you will see Dave and Sharon in this blast from the past: A video of Winston and Rachel Cruze’s wedding from 2009 http://www.vimeo.com/8363731

Pat shares successes from her daughter

On May 12, 2011, Pat from Los Angeles shared a story about her daughter who paid off almost all of her debt and negotiated the remainder from 30% interest down to 15%. Pat shared what her daughter listed as her successes through this process:

  1. Knowing how to start/push for negotiation
  2. Ask for it in writing
  3. Don’t panic when they start making heavy demands
  4. Make sure you have food, shelter, and electricity first
  5. ASSUME NO MORE DEBT
  6. Pay off what you can early and make slightly larger payments to piece away the principle
  7. Be smart enough to know you need help and get sound financial advice
  8. Utilize options available with creditors like negotiate to payoff credit cards and dental financing
There was a ninth item from the list that was not read on the air. What do you think the ninth bullet-point was?

Dave Reads: Gold Is A Bad Investment

On November 17, 2010 (1st hour) Dave read an article from MarketWatch’s Weekend Investor.  Jonathan Burton released an article that stated “Gold’s rise may end badly” and quoted Kaplan of Prospector Assess Management: “Gold at $1,400 is not what I would call an investment.  An investment is something you buy near its value.  If gold costs $450 or $500 to produce, at $1,400 you don’t have value, you have momentum.”

The bankruptcy that started it all

Today we recognize a day that became a turning point in personal finance history: the day Dave and Sharon Ramsey filed bankruptcy.

The story Dave Ramsey tells is one of making lots of money after college, borrowing even more money, and losing it all in a short period of time.  They were sued and foreclosed on and almost lost their marriage to the stress of it all.  They fought to pay everything back or work out agreements to settle the debts.

On September 23rd, 1988 they had enough and filed for bankruptcy protection. Dave was so mad at the situation that he swore to never borrow money again and sought to find out how money really works.  He studied Larry Burkett’s teachings, spoke to millionaires, and learned what the Bible had to say about money.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.  I thank Dave and Sharon Ramsey for having the strength to fight through the pain.  I thank God for giving them the character to share their failings with others.

I certainly would rather learn from his mistakes than having to go through it on my own.
